The most important issue facing this country right now is Iran. You heard me. I believe this for several reasons. 


  1. Iranian assistance will be absolutely necessary for any hypothetical Iraq solution.
  2. Ditto for Afghanistan.
  3. They are our natural ally against Wahabism.
  4. They will have nuclear weapons at some point; before that happens we should become friends.
  5. Aesthetics.
So this is why I am thrilled that the release of the captured British sailors seems to have been achieved diplomatically, through exchange. An Iranian was released in Baghdad, seemingly in exchange, although Blair denies "negotiating." I hope the US did it.

We need high-level contacts with that state. My man Bill Richardson quotes Yitzakh Rabin (I can't find the link just now): "You don't make peace with your friends, you make peace with your enemies."
