It was just seconds after the break, like ten seconds; it was as startling in the context of the game as it is edited into the reel — or more, probably. The relevant players for Spain are the midfielder Hierro and the then-nineteen year-old "playmaker" Raúl, now the senior statesman of Spanish football.
It is strange to me that I remember this game, now, almost a decade later. I watched it alone, in my grandfather's living room in Albuquerque New Mexico. The other day I had the sudden urge to see this goal on YouTube, and it was there, as if it had been waiting for me the whole time.
